Sweeping Privacy Developments
Held the Spotlight at P.S.R. 2022

IAPP Privacy. Security. Risk. focuses on the intersection of privacy and technology. The 2022 event took place in the wake of two major developments in privacy that influenced the program: the Biden Administration’s order to implement the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.

Dobbs and Artificial Intelligence
Expert speakers analyzed both issues for the P.S.R. crowd. The Dobbs decision was discussed by a keynote panel of Melanie Fontes Rainer, director, U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights; Jill Morrison, executive director, Women's Law & Public Policy Fellowship and Leadership & Advocacy for Women in Africa programs; Alexandra Reeve Givens, president and CEO, Center for Democracy & Technology; and moderator Jia Tolentino, New Yorker staff writer. They stressed the need for swift action to curb the privacy harms that quickly came to light when Dobbs was released. They were joined on the keynote stage at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater by former Google [X] chief business officer Mo Gawdat, who spoke about humanity’s evolving relationship with artificial intelligence.

U.S. Policy on Spotlight Stage
On the new Spotlight Stage, IAPP Vice President and Chief Knowledge Officer Caitlin Fennessy moderated a discussion on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework with U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration Director Alex Greenstein and American University Washington College of Law Senior Project Director Alexander Joel. They examined to discuss the national security and commercial implications of the executive order. Fennessy also joined Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter for a conversation on FTC rulemaking for commercial surveillance and data security.

The speaking programs accompanied a deep lineup of breakout sessions on topics including eliminating bias in artificial intelligence; selling privacy as an asset; working with location data; and applying the NIST framework.
